John Oliver's twist: New HBO show is the Daily Show, but weekly.
America’s favorite British funnyman, John Oliver, debuted his new HBO show on Sunday night. And if you’re a fan of his brand of satire which involves a desk, a chair and a guy talking to the camera, then you’ll probably like it.
After a successful stint filling in for Jon Stewart on Comedy Central’s Daily Show, Oliver said goodby to the guy who made him for a shot at his own show.
And the first episode of Last Week Tonight was mixed. He riffed on a number of topics: Oregon healthcare; the Vatican and elections in India, they didn’t exactly light up the audience.
Yet things really came together in the home stretch when the deadpanned interviewer grilled former NSA chief General Keith Alexander. The humorless man suffered through the best interview of the year.
